Hostel The Old Gate

"I only stayed 1 night. This review is based on that. What I liked is the building, Very traditional inside. Loved that feel. The view from the balcony is amazing. Thats what the steep climb on the hill is for...well worth the effort to get up there. The host was nice and talkative. He apologised in advance for the construction work outside. Despite it being shared rooms I had the room to myself for the night. As other reviews have mentioned when the host has finished the construction, the place it will be a nice place to stay. Worth keeping an eye on."

"Could have done with a thicker blanket, but I had a sleeping bag with me. As most solo travellers staying in hostels will. I'm sure if I asked the host he would have helped, but wasnt worth it for 1 night."

"amazing location and views, very comfortable stay (2/room) but the highlight was the hospitablility and warmth of the host! Countless recommendations and went out of his way to help me with my bags and ensured I had the most wonderful end to my albania adventures!"

"The amazing host Taula, very welcoming guy who made it feel like I was staying with a friend. Very willing to help you out and will give you some great advice on where to eat and what to see. The rooms are nice cosy, and the view from the balcony is amazing (when it's not raining lmao) There's a nice old feel to the place that just makes it so homely and really makes the experience worth while. The location yes is high up, but take a bus, walk and get those steps in or if you're extra nice he might help pick you up. But you should expect a steep walk if you want a place with a good view. It's close to everything within a 15 minute walk radius. If you want a good place to stay, there's no better option."

"It has a terrace with an amazing view — probably the best view in Gjirokaster. The room is very comfortable and clean, with good heating, and the bathroom has a properly hot shower, perfect for this cold weather. The best part, besides the view, is the owner’s hospitality — very kind, friendly, cheerful, and attentive to everything."

"The only thing I would change is adding an electric kettle for guests. There is no kitchen (with a kitchen it would be the perfect hostel), but at least having a kettle to heat water in the mornings would help a lot. The owner was always attentive and heated water for us whenever we asked, but I think it’s a very small investment that would improve everyone’s stay."

"The place is located in a beautiful place (uphill), with a nice terrace and a nice view to the valley/castle. Less than 10 minutes by walking to the Ali pasha bridge and to the castle. Comfortable bed, and good air conditioner to keep the room warm (in November). The owner is super friendly and helpful with recommendations and general information. He invited me with some mountain tea, local fruits and fruits jam to try."

"The owner is friendly and helpful. He offered to make mountain tea at night. The weather was cold and it kept me warm. He sent me to the bus station the next morning as the bus service may not be running on time on Sunday."

"There were only two single beds in a dorm room. The owner was very helpful and attentive. It is clean. It is far away from the center, and provides you more privacy if you are looking for solitude."

"There is no kitchen for the guests. Instead Tauland made for us tea and borrowed me plate and knife."
